Alaa Faraj
Nato nel 1995 a Bengasi, in Libia. Studente di ingegneria e promessa del calcio nazionale. Nel 2017, una sentenza della giustizia italiana lo ha condannato a 30 anni di carcere. Il reato contestatogli è di “concorso in omicidio plurimo e violazione delle norme sull’immigrazione”. Sulla base di testimonianze frettolose e confuse, era stato indicato come lo “scafista” del barcone dove furono trovati, nella stiva, i corpi di 49 persone morte per asfissìa durante la traversata. Era la notte di Ferragosto del 2015 e Alaa, che allora aveva vent’anni, si è sempre dichiarato innocente. Nel giugno 2025 la Corte di Cassazione ha confermato la non ammissibilità della richiesta di revisione già dichiarata dalla Corte d’Appello di Messina, che però rilevava lo scarto tra la pena comminata e la condotta tenuta, suggerendo per questo di chiedere la grazia al Presidente Mattarella. Lo scorso dicembre il Presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella gli ha concesso la grazia “parziale”, tenendo conto “del parere favorevole del Ministro della Giustizia, della giovane età del condannato al momento del fatto” e del “proficuo percorso di recupero avviato in carcere”. Ad Alaa ora restano da scontare ancora alcuni anni ed è in corso una nuova procedura di revisione del processo.
